Description:
This session considers the services, supports, tools and instruction essential to provide accessible instructional materials (AIM) to young children. It is important for educators and leaders to examine the AIM laws, policy, initiatives, implementation strategies and application to print disabled students in their early childhood years. Information will be shared about alternate formats (Braille, audio, large print and digital) and how educational teams can consider implementing these formats with young children. Examples and case studies will be shared that illustrate and examine the central concepts and considerations in services, supports, tools and instruction in literacy learning of young children.

The Common Core State Standards (CCSS) initiative provides a consistent and clear understanding of what students are expected to learn during grades K to 12. These standards were developed so that teachers and parents know exactly what they need to do to help children succeed and learn. This session will explore the use of Boardmaker software to address student goals in alignment with the CCSS. Participants will learn how the templates and features provided in Boardmaker software can be used to align activities with CCSS and support students with special learning needs.

Participants will learn their way around a Google Chromebook form start-up to shut-down. The general merits of this device as a 1:1 tool in a Universal Design for Learning (UDL) environment will be demonstrated. We will shop the Chrome Web Store to discover what apps can be found to support all learners. Some of the apps we will investigate include Google+, Google Groups, Clipular, iSpeech, the accessibility search and any new apps developed to facilitate accessibility. We will also compare the Chromebook and it's apps to iPads.

Description:
This presentation will explore the new generation of technologies for reading textbooks. Digital textbooks, available from four different sources (AIM-Virginia, Bookshare, NIMAC and Bookstream), will be reviewed in terms of how well they support reading for students with learning disabilities. Most popular reading applications for the iPad (e.g., eBooks, Blio, PDF Reader) will be discussed in relation to using digital textbooks in the classroom. Features in each application (text-to-speech, highlighting, dictionaries, hypertext, hypermedia, navigation, search, font size, bookmarks) will be compared. Practical ideas on how to incorporate digital textbooks in reading instruction for students with various needs and different grade levels will be discussed.

Despite the onslaught of high tech AT, there are still many times that low tech AT can benefit students with autism spectrum disorder or for the cognitively disabled. Using free or inexpensive items, this presentation will share the many types of tasks that can be developed to meet the specific needs of students. Guiding principles of task analysis, scaffolding and errorless learning, in addition to using a team approach, will help participants use these ideas. This presentation will help participants discover how they can make their own low tech items for use as practice, introduction of new skills, training of independent skills and to support IEP goals. Some supplies will be shared with participants. Participants will also receive extensive resources for making their own low tech tasks.

Students must have exposure to grade level academic content. As teachers, we often have to determine how to modify and differentiate activities to allow for student participation and growth. One of the essential components in this process is accessibility. Keeping cognitive ability and access in mind, learn how academic content can be modified. Examples of differentiation and access will be demonstrated, spanning from phoneme segmentation to algebra and emerging cause and effect to digital interaction. In this presentation, a teacher and an administrator from Minneapolis Public Schools will share experiences and strategies for using visual learning technology to support student independence, generalization and success in inclusive settings. In November of 2011, Minneapolis Public Schools took a step in enhancing technology to serve students with unique needs by implementing VizZle Visual Learning software in classrooms across the district. Using VizZle with existing technologies, such as SmartBoards and iPads, has helped teachers provide instruction in new and exciting ways, save time, increase time on task, provide differentiated instruction, support inclusion and provide a bridge for the home to school connection. The presentation will also provide strategies and resources that other professionals can use to begin bringing interactive technology to their programs.

Learn what options are available for moving through screens, selecting and launching apps, operating the camera, sending email and more. In this presentation, we will discuss a set of curriculum modules that enable children with motor impairments to access STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) content. We will discuss the utilization of a wireless controller for accessing tablet devices with a robotics interface in order to teach robot programming to children with disabilities. We will walk participants through the curriculum, providing hands-on demonstrations with lessons learned, to showcase how children with motor impairments are able to get involved in STEM-based activities in the K-12 space.
