In our private practice, children and young adults who use AAC technologies participate in social groups with same or similar aged peers. Currently, we have groups for preschool, school aged and young adults. We have found that many of our clients have difficulties communicating in social situations, have an over-reliance on use of nonverbal communication and are heavily dependent on familiar communication partners to speak for them. This presentation will discuss and use videos to demonstrate how individuals are taught, supported and encouraged to use authentic language during real time and real opportunities to communicate with one another in group settings. Successes, ongoing challenges and examples of necessary vocabulary that individuals of all age may need for social interactions will be discussed and shared.

During this session, we will show a series of AAC apps that build from the basic one message, to a sequence of messages, to providing simple to complex communication boards. But we aren't just going to show you apps. We are going to walk you through an implementation process called CEP: Communication Enhancement Process, that is in its sixth year of use in Oakland County Michigan Schools. Evidence-based practice is a critical aspect of speech-language pathology and is no less vital in AAC practice. Information collected through the evaluation process is used to determine which AAC tools and strategies best meet the needs of our clients and guide intervention. Performance data needs to be collected to determine how language should be represented within structures independently demonstrated and how the system can be accessed most successfully. This presentation will review general data collection strategies for assessment and intervention in speech-language pathology with application for individuals using AAC. Both long-standing and recent approaches indicate that the focus of therapy with people with aphasia (PWA) should be to increase participation in desired activities from the beginning, while also addressing the restoration of speech and language skills. Multi-modal communication, the use of many different communication tools and forms, is widely accepted as a means of increasing participation for PWA. This session will discuss a variety of tools and strategies that can be used by either PWA and/or their communication partners to increase interaction in everyday activities. We will also discuss the idea that the whole is more than the sum of its parts and provide suggestions for teaching when to use one tool/strategy and when a different tool/strategy would be more appropriate.

A challenging issue in AAC is the consistency of tools across the range of language development, from emergent through independent/autonomous communicators. Systems necessarily look and operate differently to meet the developing needs of language, cognition and access. Changing support teams and systems presents challenges to the child, who may have to learn new patterns and vocabulary organization. This session will discuss PODD (Pragmatic Organization Dynamic Display), created by Gayle Porter (Melbourne, Australia). PODD is a vocabulary organization system that spans the range of language levels and access methods. It is also a method for teaching communication based upon typical language development.

New WordPower vocabularies will be reviewed, and new device platforms will be highlighted and explained. Special features related to these newest platforms have been incorporated into WordPower. Internal internet access will be demonstrated and explained, and the differences between these two systems explained.

Description:
This session will provide an in-depth overview of the WordPower and ChatPower AAC vocabularies that have been designed for the TouchChat app and Saltillo's NOVA chat devices. New WordPower vocabularies will be reviewed, including those with 20, 24, 30, 42, 48, 60 and 80 locations. Various access strategies, including manipulation of touch screen sensitivity and scanning, will be explained and demonstrated. Unique features for TouchChat and NOVA chat vocabularies, such as use of "gestures," sharing/copying information from the WordPower vocabulary to a document, email and Facebook will be demonstrated.
