Children with autism present unique needs and interests and often require direct intervention to ensure that they reach their full potential and participate to the greatest extent possible. While deficits in communication and social skills development often exist, many children with autism possess numerous strengths that enable them to successfully use augmentative communication systems. When strategies are chosen correctly, a well-developed communication system can increase participation, support language and literacy learning and provide positive behavior supports. Through video examples and demonstration, this presentation will highlight five considerations to make when identifying the most appropriate AAC supports for children with autism.

Description:
Research shows that the best learning environments are those in which the students are engaged, active and moving. In 2012, Loudoun County Public Schools implemented a number of Xbox Kinect consoles for students with disabilities, primarily in programs for students with autism. Participants in this session will learn about the positives and pitfalls of the implementation process, as well as the progress made by students using the technology. The session will include a discussion of technical and environmental considerations, account creation, avatar generation and customization, games selection, online collaboration and communication (using Avatar Kinect), training and support and case studies describing specific IEP goal progressions and comparisons. Living, Learning and Laughing with Visual Supports

Description:
Development of visual supports has evolved from the days of one-size-fits-all picture symbols to a plethora of current options. A parent and therapist (both OTRs and ATPs) reflect on the rapid changes in the use of technology to develop individualized visual supports for a young man with autism. The subject is now 19 and successfully living in a group home. The subject has used visual supports for 17 years, ranging from black and white picture symbols to his current picture symbol library of 10,000 images. His use of visual schedules, PECS, Aided Language Stimulation, adapted reading material, social narratives and video priming are highlighted with the use of the computer and iPad.

We may all know someone with autism who exhibits challenging behaviors. Why do these behaviors occur? How can these students learn when their behavior is escalating? Description:
Social skills development can be a slow, splintered and challenging process for young children with autism. Bridging the gap between readiness to learn and actual performance is crucial for social communication development. Service providers need to integrate social communication goals into treatment for more developmentally appropriate, functional "teachable moments." Tech-based lesson plans facilitate self-regulation and language development. They involve "whole body" learning, emphasizing the visual modality. Attendees will be introduced to the Socially Speaking Assessment Protocol App and the TalkRocket Go App, both of which can be used for customizing social communication and curriculum/IEP goals for young children with autism. They will learn developmental prerequisite skills to consider and suggested strategies to methodically use these two iPad apps to teach specific skills.

Description:
The purpose of this presentation is to increase the participant's knowledge of the evidence-based practice of video modeling and to get him/her excited and confident enough to try it! Participants will receive easy-to-use charts/forms that will aid them in determining which type of video modeling to choose, planning for filming, collecting data, etc. We will provide the participants with information from multiple case studies, including video documentation of how the child performed before and after the use of video modeling. Basic editing techniques will be demonstrated. Research on the use of video modeling will be highlighted. Participants will walk away with the knowledge they need to start using these exciting strategies in their homes, classrooms and community.
