Description:
The times have changed. However, the assessment of powered mobility with children has not. How the child is assessed still resembles what occurs with adults. Children are expected to demonstrate driving and directional skills and perform upon command. They are expected to demonstrate judgment and safety, while their able bodied counterparts cannot. I will focus on how we must first assess mobility and that driving comes later. I will share successful strategies of seating/positioning/access and equipment that have allowed children to develop and demonstrate functional independence. This session will focus initially on seating, access and mobility, then shift to the equipment needed, its programming and use.

Description:
Hand-over-hand assistance is often used to "help" individuals with motor control difficulties perform motor tasks. This "assistance," if provided the wrong way, can derail an individual's ability to use movement effectively by triggering primitive reflexes. In this presentation, we will explore how neurodevelopmental therapy techniques and light touch facilitation techniques can be used to facilitate more effective motor output when accessing technology. The importance of using a prompt hierarchy will be discussed. We will explore how the balance of motivational, cognitive, sensory and motor factors influence the ability to perform a particular task at a particular time. Anat Baniel's Essential One: Movement with Attention, will be explored as it relates to technology access (Kids Beyond Limits).
