Description:
This presentation will examine the transition planning process as outline in IDEA 2004. It will highlight how this impacts the quality of the assistive technology services provided to students with disabilities during their transition from the school setting to community life. The correlation between a "good" transition plan and a successful assistive technology plan will be explored, and we'll look at ways to ensure the sustainability of assistive technology and devices after the student graduates from high school.

Description:
Through intentional recruitment and early intervention, the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater (UWW) has effectively recruited and retained students that are blind/visually impaired. UWW has intentionally developed a four-tiered transition process providing different levels of assessment and support. Over the past eight years, this model has a 93 percent retention rate from first to second year and a six-year graduation rate of 56 percent. The four levels of intervention include our thorough Pre-Enrollment Process, our four-week Summer Transition Program, Fall Orientation Program and ongoing 360-degree evaluation. This structured four-tier approach has assisted students with multiple levels of assessment while encouraging the development of self-advocacy and problem-solving skills and the effective integration of technology to thrive and succeed in the post-secondary environment at UWW.

Description:
In this presentation, an occupational therapist and assistive technology specialist from a Minnesota school district will share experiences and strategies for using visual learning tools to support transition, access and student success in academic areas. In December, 2012, ISD 917 decided to begin using VizZle as a tool to help them serve their students. Using existing technologies, such as SmartBoards and iPads, VizZle has helped teachers provide instruction in new and exciting ways, save planning time, increase student time on task and build transition skills. The presentation will also provide strategies and resources that other professionals can use to begin bringing interactive technology in their programs.
