Interactive Entertainment Systems for Learning: PlayStation Portable (PSP)
Over the past few years, I've done on-going reviews of the Nintendo DS handheld system, the PlayStation and the newer Wii. Recently, I've received some requests for more information about the PlayStation Portable (PSP) and the available games for it. Following is a review of the PSP and some of the educational and entertainment programs that I have found that appear appropriate for individuals with special needs.

Students + Teachers + Low Cost Hardware + Accessible Software = Change
By
Adam Bowker and Samuel Sennott
Preview:
The emergence of mainstream and commercially available portable computing hardware along with accessible software has the potential to make learning technology available to a far greater number of individuals with disabilities. Low-cost hardware options, such as the One Laptop Per Child XO computer, netbooks, and the iPhone and iPod touch, have quickly become available on a surprisingly phenomenal scale. Connecting these hardware options with software focused on communication, literacy and content/curriculum access has important implications related to access and high quality instruction in schools.

"Class, please take out your journals and respond to the writing prompt provided on the board..." This simple direction often results in groans, blank stares, heads drooping down on desks, requests for pencils, requests for passes to the restroom and far worse behaviors. This shouldn't surprise us. According to 2005 NAEP statistics on student writing performance: 71 percent of fourth graders, 71 percent of eighth graders and 64 percent of 12th graders did not meet writing proficiency goals.

Assistive technologies enhance the lives of so many students. But at times, the challenge isn't getting the student to adapt to the use of technology, but rather helping the adults that work with the students to understand the why and how of assistive technology.

Implementing Innovative Uses of Assistive Technology in the Classroom
By Jessi Wright, Jamie Hayhurst-Marshall and Hannah Godbey
Preview:
During the 2007-2008 school year, the West Virginia Assistive Technology System (WVATS) began a new initiative for the 2007-2008 school year promoting access to and acquisition of assistive technology for students with disabilities in public schools. The program collaborated with and provided public school teachers and personnel the opportunity to apply for mini-grants of up to $750 to fund new projects to improve outcomes for students with IEPs or 504 plans. Projects were expected to deliver outcomes by implementing projects in one of the following areas: developing innovative or creative uses of assistive technology for supporting inclusive educational environments; inventing/creating or modifying assistive technology to improve educational outcomes for students; improving social outcomes for students, including recreation, art or other extracurricular activities; and implementing strategies to support assistive technology following the students through transitions during school and from school to adult life.

Providing curriculum support to students with special needs in a classroom environment can be a challenging task. Inclusion requires us to look at the specifics of how these students can best learn in a least restrictive environment. Teams serving these populations realize that "one size does not fit all" when it comes to adapting curriculum for these learners.

Search Tips:
There are a few special characters that you can use to provide more specific search criteria. Click on a character to learn how you can use it to enhance your searches.
Show All
Special Characters
+ (plus sign)
A leading plus sign indicates that this word must be present in each row that is returned.
Example: +apple +juice
Find records that contain both the words apple and juice.
- (minus sign)
A leading minus sign indicates that this word must not be present in any of the rows that are returned.
Note: The - operator acts only to exclude rows that are otherwise matched by other search terms. Thus, a boolean-mode search that contains only terms preceded by - returns an empty result. It does not return "all rows except those containing any of the excluded terms."
Example: +apple -juice
Find records that contain the word apple but not the word juice.
* (asterisk)
The asterisk serves as the truncation (or wildcard) operator. Unlike the other operators, it should be appended to the word to be affected. Words match if they begin with the word preceding the * operator.
Example: apple*
Find rows that contain words such as "apple", "apples", "applesauce", or "applet".
() (parentheses)
Parentheses group words into subexpressions. Parenthesized groups can be nested.
Example: +apple -(sauce dumpling)
Find rows that contain the word "apple", but not the words "sauce" or "dumpling".
"" (double quotes)
A phrase that is enclosed within double quote (") characters matches only rows that contain the phrase literally, as it was typed. When words are NOT in quotes, each word is searched for independently.
Example: "apple pie"
Find rows that contain the phrase "apple pie".
