My eight and a half years of experience in the classroom, including a demonstrated history in secondary general and special education, gave me a unique perspective when I transitioned to our school district’s assistive technology department six years ago. Fully understanding the woes of trying to prepare underprepared students for post-secondary transitioning served as the catalyst that motivated me to find new ways to better meet the academic demands for students with learning disabilities in our school district. When I transitioned to our district’s assistive technology department, 181 students were referred that school year for either academic or communication support. In 2020-2021, 427 students were referred for support, and the vast majority were requests for academic concern in the areas of reading and composing written materials. The rapid advances in technology enabled our assistive technology department to utilize the new ease of accessibility for text to speech, word prediction, and speech to text to make drastic gains in better meeting the needs of students with learning disabilities.
