Centering Learning: Moving Beyond Access and
Participation in Assistive Technology

In this keynote, Dr. Erickson will discuss the need to keep student learning centered when making decisions about assistive technology devices and services. Drawing on newly published guidance on Assistive Technology Devices and Services for Children with Disabilities Under the IDEA from the U.S. Department of Education, Office of Special Education Programs, Dr. Erickson will discuss assistive technology in the context of comprehensive instruction that is designed to promote meaningful outcomes over time.

  • Dr. Erickson is a former teacher of students with significant disabilities. Her current research addresses literacy and communication assessment and intervention for students with extensive support needs, as well as the supportiveness of augmentative and alternative communication in interaction. Recent projects have focused on creating open-source professional development and implementation supports such as those available in Project Core (https://project-core.com) and Tar Heel Shared Reader (https://sharedreader.org).
