The Blueprint

Why is Language Development so Important?

That period between birth and three years of age is commonly known as “early childhood.”  The brain is cognitively developing, and intensely acquiring speech and language skills.  These skills develop best in a world that is rich with sounds, sights and consistent exposure to the speech and language of others.

Few skills learned in early childhood are as important as communication!  Communicative development for young children includes gaining the skills to understand and the ability to express thoughts, feelings and information.  Understanding communication lasts a lifetime, as we hear, see and interpret information from others continuously.

What is Receptive Language?

Receptive language is the ability to understand words and language.  It involves gaining information and meaning from routine which helps children connect words with actions. Non-verbal information is also a key element to receptive language from sights and sounds.

My Little House & Receptive Language

This toy introduces new words rich in descriptive language with these key concepts:

  • Vocabulary – new words and meaning of words
  • Grammar  – how to appropriately put words and phrases together to form sentences.
  • Spatial/locational Concepts – All the early prepositions children acquire (i.e. on/under, in/out, etc.)
  • Temporal Concepts – Relating to time (i.e. first, then, last)
  • Quantity Concepts  – Parts, pieces and accessories (i.e. empty/full, all, some)
  • Descriptive Concepts – colors, shapes, size (i.e. big/little, tall/short)

What is Expressive Language?

Expressive language is the output we give when communicating to others.  This has a lot to do with not only what is said, but how it is said through body language, facial expressions and the tone of voice.

Expressive language is the use of words, sentences, gestures and writing to convey meaning and messages to others.

My Little House & Expressive Language

This toy encourages children to take the lead, ask questions and share insights through these concepts:

  • Description – kids can share and expressively tell others what they find.
  • Narration – tell or retell a story, share ideas and stories with others.
  • Discourse – skills like explanation and persuasion to expand conversation.

Why SmartFelt Toys?

SmartFelt was invented by a child development expert and born out of a need to find a fun way to engage and promote children’s communication capabilities.

My Little House is the first product in the My Little World line, a series of fun, engaging and beneficial education toys that was developed to be flexible and easy to use, with these benefits:

  • Portable /Foldable
  • Great for either Individual or Group Play
  • High Play Value
  • Many Components & Accessories

Children are constantly learning the meaning of new vocabulary words, and categorizing them in their brains.  These new words are continually being compared and contrasted to  understand how concepts are related with their prior knowledge about the world.

MY LITTLE HOUSE CAN BE LAID FLAT LIKE A BOOK
Before assembling My Little House, your little one can open it up and match the felt pieces to the house on a flat surface. This is a great way for several kids to sit next to each other and match up pieces simultaneously.

The most fun way to play with MY LITTLE HOUSE is when it’s assembled as shown below.  Your child can move from room to room placing all the felt pieces onto the corresponding outlines. Remember: felt sticks to felt!

MY LITTLE HOUSE comes with 36 matching felt pieces, each designed with a specific purpose to enhance language skills.
