This session emphasizes the significance of patience, collaboration, and celebrating progress as individuals using AAC develop their communication skills. Attendees will explore strategies for effective device integration, building confidence, and fostering functional communication. The session will highlight the importance of teamwork between caregivers, educators, and clinicians to support individuals in their first year of AAC access. Key topics include dual symbol immersion to enhance understanding and expression, as well as resources for ongoing skill development and tracking progress. Participants will leave with practical tools to encourage meaningful communication and empower individuals to find their voice.

As a result of this activity, participants will be able to:
• 1. Identify three common communication skills AAC users typically develop during their first year of device access
• 2. Explain the importance of developmental norms in setting realistic expectations and designing effective intervention strategies for new AAC users
• 3. Demonstrate an understanding of dual symbol immersion and its role in supporting AAC learners' language development
