Description:

Assistive technology (AT) assessments often focus on deficits rather than strengths, limiting their effectiveness in fostering independence. This session explores how an occupational therapy (OT) approach to AT assessments prioritizes self-determination, creativity, and person-centered solutions. Participants will learn how to evaluate executive functioning, sensory processing, and environmental factors to recommend AT that aligns with an individual’s strengths and real-world needs. Using a disability justice framework, the presentation will highlight strategies for collaborative assessments that empower individuals with developmental disabilities. Case studies and practical demonstrations will provide attendees with actionable tools to conduct meaningful AT assessments that enhance autonomy and participation.

Learning Outcomes:

As a result of this activity, participants will be able to:

• Identify key occupational therapy principles that guide assistive technology assessments for adults with developmental disabilities.

• Analyze individual strengths, needs, and environmental factors to determine appropriate assistive technology solutions.

• Apply a strengths-based assessment framework to recommend and implement assistive technology that enhances self-determination and independence.
