Description:

This presentation delves into the journey of enabling children with significant motor disabilities to play, engage with learning, and interact with their surroundings. We’ll begin by exploring how activating adapted toys can pave the way for identifying suitable switch types and placements. We’ll then dive into alternative methods for nurturing skills through games and technology. Additionally, we’ll shed light on techniques for evaluating access skills and discuss strategies for finding engaging activities that bridge the gap between play and productivity. By the end, participants will gain a deeper understanding of the progression from activating toys to achieving independence.

Learning Outcomes:

As a result of this activity, participants will be able to:

• Identify alternative tools and activities to facilitate learning switch access.

• Implement the use of computer-based activities to work on switch access skills.

• Utilize an evaluation method to assess progress with switch access skills.
