Description:
The presentation will discuss essential components for developing literacy, especially for individuals using AAC. Interactive elements will enable real-time audience participation, allowing them to share experiences and ask questions. Attendees will select a student/patient and determine the starting point for literacy instruction using a four-question evaluation. Case studies and video examples will illustrate progress towards successful literacy instruction. Guidance will be provided on daily instructional practices in the classroom, including optimal learning conditions and necessary literacy instruction elements based on the evaluation results. Finally, resources to obtain materials for instruction and further training for implementation will be shown through the Dynamic Learning Maps, Project Core, online repositories.
Learning Outcomes:
As a result of this activity, participants will be able to:
• Compare comprehensive literacy instruction to their current literacy instruction in place for students who use AAC.
• Identify a student or client and recommend whether they begin in the emergent of conventional category of comprehensive literacy instruction.
• Identify sources of additional information related to comprehensive literacy instruction.
