Description:
Auditory scanning is a vital access technique for students with complex physical challenges and visual processing difficulties. To ensure its effectiveness, careful attention must be given to the unique and individualized configurations within the system. However, educators, therapists, and families often hesitate to modify the default settings of these devices, relying on the standard display rather than tailoring them to the specific needs of the user. This workshop empowers teachers, therapists, and families with the confidence and knowledge to make essential adjustments to AAC system configurations. Participants will explore both the “how” and “why” behind these modifications, gaining practical skills to enhance communication accessibility. Additionally, instructional materials will be provided, offering real-world examples of effective teaching strategies and AAC system architecture to support implementation.
Learning Outcomes:
As a result of this activity, participants will be able to:
• Define the term "dynamic triangle" within the context of an AAC Device and auditory scanning.
• Identify at least 2 specific components within the set-up (configuration) of the device which need to be altered for auditory scanning.
• Define the concept of "frequency" when customizing and AAC device for auditory scanning.
