Description:
In this session, we will discuss the parent coaching model within the early intervention setting and how we created meaningful literacy routines using the SETT framework to identify low-tech and high-tech books options for two children with cortical vision impairment and their families. We will discuss various access e.g. switches, head lamp, tactile symbols, and other assistive technology that can be used to individualize the client’s reading experience. The specific visual supports/strategies for children with CVI (phase 1-3) will be discussed through 2 different children and families who were served through our program. With hands-on examples and video modeling, participants will be able to engage in multi-sensory learning within our session and leave with concrete examples of ideas to implement within their own settings.
Learning Outcomes:
As a result of this activity, participants will be able to:
• Identify 3 parent coaching strategies they can utilize in routines-based intervention.
• Name at least 5 new assistive technology strategies whether low tech to high tech to support a student with complex needs in pre-literacy routine.
• Identify at least 3 resources to help support the use of assistive technology specific to Literacy.
