Description:

Supporting students with complex communication needs (CCN), especially those with cerebral/cortical visual impairments (CVI), requires a personalized approach. CVI affects students’ ability to use augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) devices, as visual challenges vary greatly among individuals. Understanding each student’s unique vision profile is crucial for selecting appropriate AAC tools. For example, increased contrast, larger buttons, and simplified images can improve device interaction. However, factors beyond vision, such as linguistic needs and app/device availability, must also be considered. Collaboration with IEP teams and vision specialists is key, along with customizing common AAC apps using accessible features. By making thoughtful adjustments, educators can significantly enhance communication for students with CVI, supporting their learning and growth.

Learning Outcomes:

As a result of this activity, participants will be able to:

• Discuss beneficial visual features for students with CVI to successfully access their AAC device.

• Identify strategies for collaborating with a student's vision specialist and IEP team.

• Implement CVI-friendly settings across a variety of common AAC apps.
