Description:
Eye gaze technology empowers children with complex communication needs to interact with their environment using only their eyes. This session highlights best practices for implementing AAC with eye gaze access in pediatric settings. Attendees will learn how to support success through structured assessments, engaging activities, and progressive skill-building. Topics include foundational skills for eye gaze, motivating play-based interactions, and transitioning from cause-and-effect to purposeful communication. The session also addresses simple customizations for children with cortical visual impairment (CVI). Real-world case studies will illustrate how eye gaze technology fosters independence and communication growth. Participants will leave with practical, easy-to-implement strategies for integrating eye gaze AAC into educational and therapeutic environments to enhance accessibility and engagement for young communicators.
Learning Outcomes:
As a result of this activity, participants will be able to:
• Describe why eye gaze matters for kids with communication and access needs.
• List what software solutions can help kids build eye gaze skills.
• Determine what customizations might benefit kids with cortical visual impairment (CVI) who use eye gaze to communicate.
