Description:
This interactive workshop equips professionals and families with strategies to use assistive technology (AT) for inclusive play and leisure activities for individuals with complex needs. Discover how AT tools like switches, AAC and smart tech can empower participation in switch-adapted games, sports, and playful explorations, fostering engagement and enjoyment. Examples will have tangible goals and feature students with complex needs, including physical/motor impairments, intellectual disabilities, and CVI, demonstrating their successful use of assistive technology. Presenters will identify ways to implement these strategies within the school, home, community settings. Participants will participate in hands-on activities and leave with ideas to implement.
Learning Outcomes:
As a result of this activity, participants will be able to:
• Describe the various applications of assistive technology (AT) within switch-adapted games, and leisure activities, including switches, powerlinks, and smart technology, to promote engagement and success.
• Evaluate at least 3 specific examples of switch-adapted games or activities that can be further enhanced with AT for increased accessibility and inclusivity.
• Design and adapt existing switch-adapted games or sports activities, creating new accessible playful experiences using readily available materials and AT tools.
