Description:
Are you looking for more ways to engage your students with complex communication needs, physical disabilities and vision impairments? Social scripts are a highly motivating medium for these students! Come learn about using co-constructed, sequenced messages (social scripts) to support AAC users in having conversations (including pranks!), sharing their stories, and engaging in literacy-related and play activities. High tech and light tech tools will be highlighted, including a range of apps, devices, and strategies for using them fully. Social scripts will be demonstrated with real life examples and multiple opportunities for group participation including critiquing and designing social scripts. Come prepared to have fun and learn new skills!
Learning Outcomes:
As a result of this activity, participants will be able to:
• Describe at least three light-tech tools and three high-tech tools to support social scripts and determine which is appropriate for each target/ student group.
• Propose 3 strategies for co-constructing social scripts and use those tips to co-construct a social script with a group.
• Differentiate 3 strategies for incorporating social scripts into activities including conversations, storytelling, pranks, active play, and literacy activities (e.g., phonemic awareness, celebrating writing).
