Description:
This session will demonstrate how to apply AI technologies to improving switch access and augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) for people with severe motor and neurological disabilities. Our “FaceSwitch” app for iOS and iPadOS detects facial movements of users through the camera and utilizes AI to recognize and analyze these movements, enabling their use as switch inputs. It enables actions like mouth opening or eye closing to control devices, produce sounds, or speak using synthetic speech. Case studies include users with cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy, and ALS, highlighting the app’s adaptability. This session will also discuss the applications of AI technology to cognitive assessments and the design of communication support approaches for people with severe multiple disabilities.
Learning Outcomes:
As a result of this activity, participants will be able to:
• Explain the challenges faced by people with severe motor and neurological disabilities.
• Identify key points in supporting their communication and utilizing AI.
• Discuss future approaches to individualized optimization using AI.
