Description:
We need kids to participate in order to teach them! However, too often, we move right to our planned activity and overlook the prerequisites of establishing felt safety and regulation that are essential for skill building and learning. This session will introduce the neuroscience-informed Model of Child Engagement, identify the 8 sensory systems that impact skill building and learning, and introduce ‘My Sensory Journey’, an application where student “navigators” choose an avatar based on their sensory profile, select a skill to learn, and journey with a grown-up to learn and practice the skill. Participants will leave with a better understanding of the foundational skills needed for optimal learning, as well as new strategies to engage learners and increase participation.
Learning Outcomes:
As a result of this activity, participants will be able to:
• Describe the three stages of the Model of Child Engagement used to increase engagement in children.
• Identify the 8 sensory systems and describe the functions of the vestibular, proprioceptive and interoceptive systems.
• Describe three activities or strategies using technology to increase participation in daily activities.
