Description:

In this session, participants will explore a year-long AAC mentorship model designed to build confidence and skills for speech-language pathologists (SLPs) and speech-language pathology assistants (SLPAs) who support individuals with complex communication needs. The presenter will describe how professional learning groups will use realistic case studies, “Diving Deep” AAC application modules, and curated resource sharing to strengthen assessment, intervention, and communication partner training. Attendees will see examples of case study templates, device feature roadmaps, and resource kits. The session will highlight strategies for addressing common barriers such as device variety overwhelm and limited programming experience, while integrating supports for individuals with cortical visual impairment (CVI) and those who are deaf or hard of hearing. Participants will leave with templates, schedules, and tools to implement this model.

• As a result of this presentation, participants will be able to design a mentorship plan that supports SLPs and SLPAs in building sustainable AAC skills through case-based collaboration and resource-sharing.
