Description:

Research shows that students with a strong sense of belonging are more likely to be engaged in school and perform well academically. They see themselves not only as social members of a group, but intellectual members. So, what can you do to foster a sense of belonging in the classroom? In this session, we will explore applying Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles in a very practical way with tools and strategies to enhance physical, academic, and social belonging for students. Many of the resources shared can be adapted for use in elementary, secondary and higher education settings.

Learning Outcomes:

As a result of this activity, participants will be able to:

• Implement at least one actionable tool or strategy to improve the sense of physical belonging among students.

• Implement at least one actionable tool or strategy to improve the sense of academic belonging among students.

• Implement at least one actionable tool or strategy to improve the sense of social belonging among students.
