Description:

This session will demonstrate how scanning pens, portable text scanning assistive technology tools, support students with disabilities in accessing print, improving reading fluency, and increasing independence across instructional settings. Presenters will guide participants through specific how tos, tips, and implementation strategies drawn from real classroom use, including a Tennessee summer literacy pilot. Attendees will observe live demonstrations, compare Scanmarker features to traditional text to speech tools, and examine quantitative performance data showing gains in reading accuracy, stamina, and task completion. The session will conclude with participant discussion and practical planning for integrating Scanmarker into special education, intervention, and inclusive classrooms.

Learning Outcomes:

As a result of this activity, participants will be able to:

• 1. Explain at least three specific reading or access barriers that scanning pens can address for students with disabilities.

• 2. Demonstrate two Scanmarker features that support text to speech, translation, or digital capture during classroom tasks.

• 3. Design one implementation routine or accommodation plan that integrates scanning pens into a special education or intervention setting.
