Description:

This session provides a framework for starting your own language, literacy, learning, and leisure group based on in-depth study of topics such as: countries, habitats, Black History, or a specific book study. We will share diverse stories of how we have implemented this approach both in-person and remotely, with adolescents, teens, and adults, led by SLPs and parents. Focus will be on emergent / transitional learners, including AAC use. We will show samples of: materials, interactive opportunities, and tools. We will discuss logistics and where to find materials to create your own literacy groups. Throughout the session, participant interaction will be encouraged.

Learning Outcomes:

As a result of this activity, participants will be able to:

• Describe at least three goals for student outcomes using the Literacy group framework.

• Discuss at least two differences between in-person and remote implementation of the Literacy Group framework.

• Develop a plan to include at least four components (e.g., science experiment, geography overview, shared poem) into a study of a target topic.
