Description:

This engaging and interactive session will bust persistent math myths and reveal how they shape instructional choices and student identities. Through collaborative activities, educators will explore the myths that limit students’ access to rigorous and meaningful math experiences. Participants will uncover the impact of these beliefs—especially on students with disabilities and learners from historically marginalized groups—and gain tools to redesign math instruction using UDL principles, growth mindset research, and culturally relevant practices. Whether you’re a classroom teacher, instructional coach, or special education professional, you’ll leave with ready-to-use strategies and renewed confidence to challenge the narratives that keep students from thriving in math. Come ready to learn, unlearn, and laugh as we debunk, disrupt, and design a better way forward in mathematics education!

Learning Outcomes:

As a result of this activity, participants will be able to:

• Implement tools and resources to support the development of students’ positive mathematical identities.

• Identify at least five common myths in mathematics instruction that hinder equitable access and student engagement.

• Analyze the impact of math myths on learners, including students with disabilities and those from underrepresented groups
