Description:

Ann Yurcek shares the inspiring journey of Mac, a young boy with multiple disabilities who overcame tremendous odds through the power of assistive technology, adaptive tools, and a determined caregiver-turned-teacher. This session uses storytelling to explore how individualized strategies, modifications for visual and auditory challenges, and a mindset of presuming competence can help even the most vulnerable children thrive. Attendees will gain practical tools and fresh perspectives to support students with complex needs in meaningful, innovative ways.

Learning Outcomes:

As a result of this activity, participants will be able to:

• Describe practical strategies for selecting and customizing assistive technology and accessibility tools and describe CVI characteristics and materials for CVI and visual impairment.

• Discuss support tools and describe what an Emotional Support Partner stuffie can be a tool and bridge to help a child be able to cope in anxiety provoking environments.

• Evaluate the strategies and inspire through the relatable real life case study of Mac and Mom.
