Description:
Does your district provide guidance for determining the need for a reading accommodation, such as text to speech (TTS)? Many students have little experience using text to speech (TTS) during instruction, resulting in a lack of access to learning, and little benefit in learning outcomes. Most states provide guidelines for determining eligibility, while practitioners struggle to justify the need. In this session, participants will be empowered to advocate for the use of TTS throughout instruction and assessment, and justify the need with authentic data. Specifically, the presenter will provide an explanation of the Protocol for Accommodations in Reading (PAR), a free resource for determining reading accommodations, and the resources needed for implementation.
Learning Outcomes:
As a result of this activity, participants will be able to:
• Analyze a student's need for a reading accommodation
• Compare and Contrast an automated screening tool and an individualized protocol for examining reading needs
• Formulate a replicable process for determining the need for reading accommodations in a classroom, school, department, grade, or district
Disclosures:
Linda Bastiani Wilson is the co-author of the Protocol for Accommodations in Reading. She occasionally consults with the developers of the Universal Protocol for Accommodations in Reading, but does not receive any financial compensation. She is a full time employee of Montgomery County Public Schools in Maryland.
