Description:
Artificial intelligence offers a transformative opportunity to support AAC users in developing writing and communication skills. Using AI as a personalized writing tutor, educators can apply this model to AAC with embedded features to guide users through idea generation, sentence formulation, and revision. This approach enhances language development, promotes independence, confidence, and engagement. By tailoring integration of AI tools into AAC, practitioners can scaffold expressive language, offering just-in-time support and feedback. This session will outline the rationale for how AI features can be employed while preserving AAC user independence and agency. Specific case examples will be shared depicting the use of AI generated writing and vocabulary effectively supporting and advancing the AAC learner while at the same time encouraging a rich, collaborative interaction with educators.
Learning Outcomes:
As a result of this activity, participants will be able to:
• Identify the ways AI-enhanced features can support AAC users during writing and communication tasks.
• Explain how embedded AI tools align with evidence-based AAC practices such as aided language stimulation and prompt hierarchies.
• Apply ethical considerations when selecting and implementing AI features in AAC systems to support autonomy and user intent.
