Description:

This session will review the purpose of AT and highlight some of the work being done in occupational therapy education to instruct students in providing these tools to clients. Specific emphasis will be placed on a process that can be utilized for instruction and the importance of interprofessional collaboration when designing custom pieces of assistive technology. Examples will be shared from a class project at a midwestern entry level doctorate of occupational therapy program in order to demonstrate the application of this learning.

As a result of this activity, participants will be able to:

• Discuss a process for educating occupational therapy students about the provision of assistive technology in occupational therapy practice.

• Identify the benefits of interprofessional collaboration for the fabrication of assistive technology.

• Recognize the benefits of custom assistive technology, from low to high tech, designed for a specific patient and population.
