Description:
In my session, “The Boy Who Reads in Bubbles,” I will share how I taught my son Mac-who has Cortical Visual Impairment (CVI) and auditory processing challenges-to read using innovative, accessible strategies. I’ll introduce and demonstrate to the attendees to the Roman Word Bubbling app and showing how this tool and why its important to reduce visual clutter and help students with CVI focus on words and pictures. Through hands-on activities, I will guide participants in creating their own materials and show examples of adapting literacy instruction for students with visual and processing challenges. By sharing our journey and helping educators to have practical resources that were not available when I needed them for Mac. I hope to inspire and equip educators, specialists, and families to help every child access the world of reading, no matter the barriers they face.
Learning Outcomes:
As a result of this activity, participants will be able to:
• Identify the core features of CVI and its impact on literacy.
• Identify the connection between visual and auditory processing challenges and the impact on learning.
• Describe benefits of word bubbling tools and strategies and create materials for their own students.
Disclosures:
My own products will be included as resources within my presentation. I have created some CVI related resources. The Boy Who Reads in Bubbles cards. Furry The Little Penguins That Could, by Ann Yurcek and Furry The Little Penguin Who Cares., by Ann Yurcek
