Description:

Shifting the focus to communication partners, this research will examine barriers to communication partner training from the perspective of those caring for individuals with post-stroke Aphasia. Through qualitative interviews, we explore the motivations of communication partners—both for and against participating in training and continuing the use of AAC devices. The discussion of this study will highlight the critical need of communication partner training and identify key areas of improvement to promote success in training outcomes.

Learning Outcomes:

As a result of this activity, participants will be able to:

• Identify three key areas for improvement of communication partner training that support participant retention

• Interpret communication partners’ motivations for and against participation in communication partner training in order to better support clients.

• Propose context-specific solutions to enhance training engagement by evaluating common barriers faced by communication partners.
