Description:
This poster session will present the results of a study examining the impact of AI-adapted academic texts on the reading comprehension of older learners with intellectual disabilities who need or use AAC, enrolled in Penn State’s WorkLink program. Attendees will learn about the systematic prompting strategy for adapting texts using ChatGPT, review data on participant comprehension performance, and explore feedback from students participants on the acceptability of AI-adapted texts. Concrete examples of original and adapted texts, deep-cloze, multiple choice assessments, and social validity findings will be shared. Participants will leave with practical tools and ideas to replicate AI-adapted text supports for meaningful participation in GE settings.
Learning Outcomes:
As a result of this activity, participants will be able to:
• Describe the steps involved in using the AIR prompting strategy to create AI-adapted academic texts for older learners with intellectual disabilities who need or use AAC.
• Compare comprehension outcomes for older learners using unaltered versus AI-adapted academic texts.
• Discuss student participant perceptions regarding the effectiveness and acceptability of AI-adapted materials.
