Description:
In this session, participants will learn how to build an effective Adult Assistive Technology (AT) program using a multidisciplinary, collaboration‑driven approach within an inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation hospital. The presenter will describe how an AT specialist will establish key elements such as referral pathways, organized AT spaces, streamlined workflows, and coordinated communication across occupational therapy, physical therapy, speech‑language pathology, and the medical team. Participants will then see how adults with stroke, brain injury, spinal cord injury, limb loss, oncology conditions and other complex diagnoses will use technologies that support communication, cognition, computer access, environmental control, and early mobility readiness. The session will conclude with practical strategies for structuring an AT care space and training staff to promote consistent, successful AT adoption.
Learning Outcomes:
As a result of this activity, participants will be able to:
• Participants will identify at least two essential structural or workflow components needed to establish an effective adult Assistive Technology program in a hospital‑based rehabilitation setting.
• Participants will analyze at least two common barriers to Assistive Technology integration in adult rehabilitation and determine one workflow strategy to improve AT service consistency.
• Participants will apply at least one strategy for organizing an Assistive Technology care space and one method for training clinical staff to increase successful AT adoption and patient outcomes.
