Description:

Executive Function (EF) skills, such as time management, organization, and emotional regulation, are essential for student success in school and life. Despite their importance, these skills are often overlooked or misunderstood as behavior problems. In today’s tech-driven world, a strong EF foundation is still critical for long-term independence. This session explores how to make informed decisions when using Assistive Technology (AT) to support EF development. Participants will learn how to identify EF challenges, align appropriate AT tools, and integrate EF instruction into daily routines. Strategies will include both low- and high-tech supports, with a focus on purposeful teaching and skill-building. Attendees will walk away with practical tools and insights to help students grow their Executive Function skills—essential life skills that support academic achievement, behavior, and independence.

Learning Outcomes:

As a result of this activity, participants will be able to:

• Explain the correlation between executive skill weaknesses and student behavior.

• Discuss student needs to determine which Executive Function challenges are present and select appropriate Assistive Technology tools to support development.

• Consider how they can design strategies to integrate Executive Function instruction into daily classroom routines using both low-tech and high-tech supports.
