Description:

Do you struggle to find the perfect balance of following the child’s lead while objectively demonstrating language growth through AAC? Speech-Language Pathologist and AAC enthusiast, Laurie Shaw, will guide participants on an engaging journey as they examine a question many clinicians and caregivers grapple with: “why isn’t modeling without expectation working?” In this session, we will explore the neurological implications of intrinsic motivation, play, and child-led interactions within the context of AAC modeling and how leading with joy and human connection can shift therapeutic trajectories. Laurie will share anecdotes from her own clinical experience and use video case studies to analyze moments where prioritizing joy enhances language growth. Plan to join the conversation as we collaboratively re-imagine modelling with AAC.

Learning Outcomes:

As a result of this activity, participants will be able to:

• Participants will identify neurological and physiological components of experiencing joy and discuss how these impact language acquisition using an AAC device.

• Participants will learn practical ways to elicit joyful, child-led interactions while prioritizing therapeutic outcomes within intrinsically motivating tasks.

• Participants will differentiate critical components of effective modeling for AAC users while reviewing case study videos.
