Description:

This session will provide a systematic framework for moving beyond device acquisition to achieve functional communication for students who use Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC). Participants will first identify common systemic barriers to consistent AAC use in school settings, such as staff hesitation and the “backpacking” of devices. The session will then outline a four-pillar implementation model focused on Access, Opportunities, Partner Support, and Consistency. Throughout the hour, the presenters will demonstrate concrete examples of Aided Language Stimulation using robust systems. Attendees will explore how to embed specific vocabulary targets into both academic lessons and nonacademic routines, including recess and lunch transitions. The session will conclude with a guided walkthrough of practical products, including Communication Opportunity Maps, Staff Implementation Checklists, and “Five-Minute” Training Modules, providing a clear roadmap for fostering a school-wide culture of student-led communication.

Learning Outcomes:

As a result of this activity, participants will be able to:

• Identify common barriers to AAC implementation in school environments and explain how these barriers impact student communication opportunities.

• Apply a structured framework for embedding AAC use across daily school routines, including academic instruction, transitions, and social interactions.

• Develop strategies for training and supporting communication partners, including teachers, paraprofessionals, and related service providers.
