Description:
What does comprehensive literacy actually look like in a classroom serving AAC users? This session moves beyond philosophy to practice, helping educators design daily, communication-focused literacy routines that include every learner. Grounded in research from the Center for Literacy and Disability Studies at UNC Chapin Hill, participants will learn how to structure shared reading, writing, and alphabet instruction so that literacy instruction is diverse, daily, and accessible. Attendees will leave with practical planning tools and adaptable routine frameworks.
Learning Outcomes:
As a result of this activity, participants will be able to:
• Design daily literacy blocks that include shared reading, independent reading, writing, and alphabet instruction
• Integrate AAC and communication supports across all literacy routines
Create predictable instructional structures that build over time
• Align interdisciplinary team roles to sustain comprehensive literacy instruction
