Description:

Participants will explore how thematic learning tubs will be designed and implemented to support young children, including children with visual impairments and children with additional disabilities. The session will begin with an overview of the purpose and structure of thematic learning tubs, emphasizing how organized, theme-based materials will promote engagement, predictability, and meaningful participation across developmental domains.

Participants will then examine key components of effective tub design, including alignment with developmental goals, incorporation of sensory-motor experiences, and strategies for differentiating instruction to meet individual learner needs. Concrete examples of thematic tubs (e.g., literacy-based, sensory exploration, and functional play themes) will be shared to illustrate how activities can be adapted for varying ability levels.

The session will also demonstrate how assistive technology and adaptive supports will be embedded within tub activities to increase access and independence. Examples will include the use of AAC systems, single- and two-switch scanning activities, tactile materials, and visual supports such as first/then boards and choice-making systems. Participants will observe how these supports will be integrated into structured routines to enhance communication, participation, and skill development.

Finally, participants will engage in guided planning to develop a thematic learning tub applicable to their own setting. Sample templates, visual supports, and activity ideas will be provided as take-away resources. By the end of the session, participants will have practical tools and strategies to create inclusive, hands-on learning experiences that support diverse learners in educational and therapeutic environments.

Learning Outcomes:

As a result of this activity, participants will be able to:

• Participants will understand how to design and implement thematic learning tubs to support engagement, independence, and skill development in young learners.

• Participants will identify strategies to incorporate assistive technology and adaptive supports within thematic tubs.

• Participants will design at least one thematic learning tub that includes materials, objectives, and support strategies.
