Description:
Supporting the development of access and providing accessibility (to activity
participation and AAC/AT ) for students with complex bodies can be a huge challenge. Focusing on the technology is frequently considered to be more important than the activity within which it will be used in the classroom.
We need to understand the relationship between the motor development, cognitive exploration and the environmental impact in the use of AAC and AT and then its subsequent use within task performance. We need to recognize that true task engagement is what must be supported and encouraged and within which seating and access to AT reside. We need to recognize this is not a matter of specific outcomes, but rather a journey of discovery.
Learning Outcomes:
As a result of this activity, participants will be able to:
• 1. identify at least 2 classroom tasks utilizing access to AAC/AT as to whether the task is “motor” practice or “cognitive” practice.
• 2. identify 3 physical characteristics of an “active postural control” position in their students with complex bodies when engaged in classroom tasks.
• 3. Identify 3 alternative access methods that work with 3 daily activities within a classroom day.
