Description:
Language and mobility are inevitably linked in human development. How can we support this growth and development with students with complex bodies who do not exhibit independent mobility and are learning language?
It is critical that the whole team, OT, PT, SLP and teachers all understand these links are critical throughout every day and every activity. These links help develop cognitive mapping and cognitive focus. These two processes are important for AT use and ownership. Independence itself within any environment is our goal for our children, yet, we are not creating learning opportunities which includes both. Today’s workshop will support how and what we can do for more inclusive use of all AT throughout the child’s day within their classrooms and school environments.
Learning Outcomes:
As a result of this activity, participants will be able to:
• 1. The participant will be able to define the term “cognitive mapping” and give two examples of it.
• 2. The participant will be able to Identify at least 2 classroom tasks where independent mobility could be included.
• The participant will be able to Identify at least 2 physical characteristics of an “active postural control“ position which supports cognitive focus, in their students with complex bodies when engaged in classroom tasks.
Disclosures:
Lisa is a manufacturer. However, in this workshop she is not being paid, nor is she expecting recompense. We work together a lot, in the field and have for over 30 years, and she will working together with Karen, to share experiences and cases.
