Description:

Despite decades of research showing that all students can learn to read, many learners with complex communication needs are still denied meaningful literacy instruction. As schools rapidly adopt Science of Reading practices, this gap is widening—leaving AAC users further behind. Grounded in the work of Karen Erickson and David Koppenhaver, this session confronts the urgent need to translate research into practice. With UFLI Foundations as one example, participants will explore common scope and sequences for structured literacy programs. We will examine the ways the new LessonPix Literacy Toolbox can support the development of aligned intervention resources and demonstrate the development of language intervention resources that are aligned with UFLI.

Learning Outcomes:

As a result of this activity, participants will be able to:

• Participants will compare options for professional learning and apply concepts from these opportunities to their individual settings.

• Participants will describe key principles of the Science of Reading and their implications for students with complex communication needs.

• Participants will apply tools (e.g., LessonPix and structured literacy scopes like UFLI Foundations) to create aligned, accessible intervention materials to support phonics development.
