Description:

This session will showcase the combined power of inclusive technology tools and strategies for the writing process. In Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS), using embedded organizational tools and readily-available text-to-speech options in tandem with the Read&Write for Google Chrome extension by Everway (a Tier 2/3 tool) has supported increased written output for students in inclusive environments. Tools will be demonstrated in Google and Microsoft platforms. The session will include outcome data as well as a brief discussion of ways to individualize this approach for specific division/student needs. The session will emphasize how leveraging inclusive strategies has increased access and amplified student voice in FCPS.

Learning Outcomes:

As a result of this activity, participants will be able to:

• 1. Describe three ways that specific technology tools within Google and Microsoft environments can support the writing process in inclusive
settings.

• 2. Compare the use of tools in Google (including the Read&Write for Google Chrome extension), in Microsoft and traditional scaffolds to support
written expression in the K-12 setting.

• 3. Select and customize appropriate tools and strategies in alignment with individual school division or class needs for ELA and Project-Based
Learning (PBL) contexts.
