Description:
This session will introduce GuLP AAC, a communication software designed around phrase-based language learning, built by a team of three SLPs and six software engineers in response to a shared clinical gap. Presenters will open with a focused overview of gestalt language processing, explaining how some AAC users acquire language through whole phrases and scripts rather than single words, and how existing tools have not yet been designed with this profile in mind. Participants will then see a live demonstration of GuLP’s core features: vocabulary and script organization, the remix feature, AI-powered language sample analysis and device customization, vocal intonation and emotion, always-accessible core words, and visual learning scenes. Each feature will be connected to a specific need identified through clinical practice with phrase-based learners. Participants will leave with a stronger foundation for understanding gestalt language processing in the context of AAC, and early access information for GuLP, currently nearing beta launch.
Learning Outcomes:
As a result of this activity, participants will be able to:
• As a result of this activity, participants will be able to describe at least three ways gestalt language processing differs from analytic language processing and explain why those differences create specific demands on AAC system design.
• As a result of this activity, participants will be able to assess AAC tools and make targeted adaptations to support phrase-based learners across language development stages.
• As a result of this activity, participants will be able to identify at least four GuLP AAC features and explain how each addresses a documented gap in existing AAC tools for gestalt language processors.
Disclosures:
