Experience

Kate Nilson has been a Speech-Language Pathologist since 2007, after earning her master’s degree from the University of Vermont. She has practiced across inpatient, outpatient, acute care, and transitional care settings before discovering her passion for home care and, specifically, augmentative and alternative communication (AAC). Kate spent many years with Fairview Home Care and Hospice, providing specialized AAC assessment and intervention. In 2017, she joined the University of Minnesota ALS Clinic, where she continues to serve as the lead SLP for the multidisciplinary neuromuscular team. In 2021, Kate transitioned from home care to focus fully on supporting people with ALS, joining the ALS Association as a Care Services Manager, where she also helps oversee the AAC loan program. In addition to her clinical work, Kate teaches the Intro to AAC course at the University of Minnesota and consults for Synchron BCI.
