Description:

Our lecture begins with a quick review of the SLP and OT professions and the standards encompassing augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) and access as it applies to clients impacted by speech and upper limb motor deficits. The necessary collaboration between SLP and OT is highlighted by providing real-life case examples. We will discuss specific access methods for different levels of AAC including: *low tech modifications to extend use of writing for communication *use of built-in accessibility changes, potential stylus changes, and mouse emulation with smart phones/tablets to enhance access to AAC apps *considerations for use of switch and eye gaze access for AAC We will conclude by answering questions from the audience and providing hands-on learning with equipment discussed in our lecture.
