Description:
This session will examine how Cortical Visual Impairment (CVI) impacts a student’s ability to effectively access and use AAC systems. Presenters will analyze commonly used AAC applications through a CVI-informed lens, highlighting visual modifications that support consistent communication. Successful CVI-friendly AAC implementation requires understanding each student’s unique visual characteristics, systematically introducing modifications, and ongoing assessment of visual accessibility. The ultimate goal is to develop communication systems that honor both the learner’s communicative intent and their visual processing needs, ensuring that AAC serves as a bridge to connection, rather than a barrier to access.
Learning Outcomes:
As a result of this activity, participants will be able to:
• Attendees will list three defining characteristics of CVI that interfere with visual access to high-tech AAC systems.
• Attendees will compare visual accessibility features across three or more AAC applications, identifying supports aligned to CVI-specific needs.
• Attendees will develop two or more interdisciplinary strategies to integrate CVI-informed adaptations into AAC selection and implementation.
