Description:
Access to Accessible Educational Materials (AEM) is essential to ensuring a free and appropriate public education (FAPE) under IDEA. For students who are deaf and hard of hearing and use American Sign Language (ASL), traditional print and captioning often do not provide full access. ASL videotext, which presents content through recorded sign language, serves as a bridge between written English and visual language, supporting comprehension and independence. In this session, participants will examine the laws and responsibilities related to AEM in ASL and explore practical tools for implementation. Participants will also learn strategies to advocate for AEM in ASL and integrate ASL videotext across content areas to improve language access, literacy development, and equitable instructional opportunities.
Learning Outcomes:
As a result of this activity, participants will be able to:
• The participants will be able to describe the laws, rules, and statutes related to AEM in ASL in K-12 schools.
• The participants will be able to explain the school district's responsibilities related to AEM in ASL.
• The participants will be able to identify at least three AEM in ASL resources.
