Description:
Learn how assistive technology can help support students who struggle with emotional regulation. This session will focus on how assistive technology can help students regulate emotions to form positive relationships. Examples of low- and high-tech tools will be shared, emphasizing free tools available on many of the platforms your students are already using. Extensions, apps, websites, low-tech tools, and stand-alone devices will be demonstrated so you feel confident in their features and are ready to consider them for your students.
Learning Outcomes:
As a result of this activity, participants will be able to:
• Identify and describe at least three common causes of emotional dysregulation (e.g., sensory overload, executive functioning challenges, communication breakdowns) and explain how each may impact student behavior.
• Differentiate and categorize at least three low-tech and three mid/high-tech assistive technology tools that support emotional regulation, based on their features and intended use.
• Match at least three student regulation needs to appropriate assistive technology supports and outline one measurable indicator (e.g., frequency, duration, or independence) to monitor effectiveness.
