Description:
“I don’t know about you, but I’m feelin’ 22!” This workshop tackles the transition from school to adulthood by exploring how assistive technology can be used for more than just “work,” and also for choice-making, leisure, and ADLs.
Presenters will showcase specific examples of how students with complex bodies and communication needs use AT to prep snacks (food/drink), control their environment (ECU), and engage in leisure activities. Participants will engage in a “after (school) party” sesh, mapping out how to adapt post school days using everything from high-tech switches to mainstream devices. You’ll leave with at least 22 new ideas to help your students transition into their most social era yet!
Learning Outcomes:
As a result of this activity, participants will be able to:
• Analyze the differences between Environmental Control Units (ECUs) and smart home interfaces to determine the best fit for specific user needs.
• Identify and select specific strategies that enable independence in Activities of Daily Living (ADLs).
• Evaluate barriers to leisure activities and propose practical solutions to increase active participation.
